MARRIAGE: The Most Fundamental Institution of Civilization and also The Most Importantly Enduring Human Institution

How complementary are marriage and religion to each other? How important is religion in marriage or vice versa? These subjects may be extremely controversial nowadays considering the disparity of beliefs, opinions and principles of many with regards to marriage—same sex marriages: the lesbians and gay marriages—and religion. Everyone has a different opinion in religion and as with any marital dilemma for those who do not share the same religion, respect for each other’s beliefs is important. Communication is the key. Same religion may not seem important to some people, but to others, the sharing and mingling of faith and belief is paramount to the success of a marriage. However, mixed faith marriages do survive as well. The core is in the unity of philosophy about your church or religion. Whether or not you go to an Islamic or a Buddhist temple, to a Protestant, Baptist, or a Catholic church, religion—like marriage—is deeply personal. Respect and understanding can smoothen the differences.

On June 5 ‘06, U.S. Pres. George W. Bush delivered a statement on the Marriage Protection Amendment in the Presidential Hall of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building. He said to his audience, “You come from many backgrounds and faith traditions, yet united in this common belief: Marriage is the most fundamental institution of civilization, and it should not be redefined by activist judges.” Marriage protection is very essential as divorce rates in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world is rising.
