Summer Vacation and Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is defined by Wikipedia as an infection of the tonsils and will often cause a sore throat and fever. Yes, I was sick and had tonsillitis while half-way through to my vacation. I first accused the afternoon mosquitoes for causing my sudden sickness and high fever as several of them bit me during my regular internet sessions at a nearby internet cafe.

Acute, subacute and chronic are the 3 main types of tonsillitis — acute tonsillitis can either be bacterial or viral (75%) in origin, subacute tonsillitis (which can last between 3 weeks and 3 months) is caused by the bacterium Actinomyces, and chronic tonsillitis, which can last for long periods if not treated, is almost always bacterial.

Treatments of tonsillitis consist of pain management medications and lozenges. If the tonsillitis is caused by bacteria, then antibiotics are prescribed, with penicillin being most commonly used. Erythromycin is used for patients allergic to penicillin.
