Beans are usually understated in their health benefits. Ask for more beans the next time you have lunch so you could get more fibre. Each serving of beans contains more than 20% of your daily fibre needs, which is more than any other vegetable. Not only that! Beans are also excellent sources of proteins, which is beneficial to those with diabetes, and vitamins. Some other nutritional benefits of beans include the beans’ basic capability to be the major player in the fight against cancer. Beyond that, they also help lower cholesterol and are good for the heart. They provide a major source of soluble fiber which when passing through the digestive tract grabs and traps bile that contains cholesterol, removing it from the body before it’s absorbed. Patti Bazel Weil, R.D., the author of “Magic Beans“, said that eating a cup of cooked beans a day can lower your total cholesterol by up to 10% in 6 weeks and though that may not seem like much but it actually decreases your risk of heart disease by 20%. But because of the high fiber in beans, they can also curb your appetite for fattier more dangerous foods.

Beans is something that shoulf be included in every Filipino’s diet.
For is Pinoys, eating beans is associated with being poor. Except maybe if you are opening a can of pork and beans..
In Africa, for example, beans is part of staple diet, aside from Yam. Africans combine beans with plenty of tomatoes.
That is why Africans, despite their perceive low-income lifestyle, are generally taller, have stronger bone structure and solid physique. All because their diet is very rich in plant protein, plant fiber and anti-oxidant (tomatoes).
To change the outcome in terms of height among Filipino kids, we should start changing our diet from rice-based and carbohydrate-based to something more protein-rich.
Otherwise, we Pinoys will remain ‘ambisyoso’ thinking we will be able to triumphed on tall men’s games such as basketball, football, volleyball and now, track and field (seen Usain Bolt?)
